Spring is here, time to sow

Spring is upon us. It’s been a slow start with some small frost remaining some mornings, but these next couple of days will be warm enough to sow and finalising the preparation of our raised garden beds and rows of soil for sowing seeds. Ben and I purchased a bundle of seeds to sow vegetables, fruits, herbs and native edible bushes on our acreage. It’s all a bit of trial and error with being new to the growing seen, but we will do our best and learn as we go. I’ve already learnt a few lessons in the sowing of … Continue reading Spring is here, time to sow

Tick season is here

It’s spring time and the ticks are out in force. Our mother in laws horse had ticks crawl up his penis and swell so much he was having issues urinating. I’ve pulled ticks of the cat and the dogs have still been ok thankfully to the tick repellent tablets we give them regularly. Our little boy Hunter, our little farm baby, was unwell 2 nights ago. I though he felt hot and when I checked him he had temperatures around 38.6. He had no other symptoms. The next day his temperature eased in the morning but spiked again after a … Continue reading Tick season is here

Watering the plants

Today we pondered around the gardens and trees, checking the progress of everything. Our Lilly pillies look to be still travelling wel and have spruced up after water and Seasol. We watered them again today gently. I have to keep an eye on Hunters watering skills as he likes to force the hose spout into the soil and make to one big mud pie feast. The greenhouse has still got broccoli and cauliflowers growing. They both are producing smaller vegetables but I’m putting it down to my rookie skills and needed to space everything more. Allowing more room allows more … Continue reading Watering the plants

Lilly Pilly hedge

Today Hunter and I collected the sprouting Lilly pilly shoots from under our large Lilly pilly tree. They had all shot up from the seed pods that had dropped off around 3 months ago. We dug up 40 holes along our front fence line, filled the holes with premium quality soil, planted the tree sprouts in firmly and watered them. After watering we sprayed them with Seasol. I plan to water them every 3-4 days depending on the temperature and rain fall. I’ll spray with Seasol every 2 weeks as well. Hunter loves getting into the dirt when we are … Continue reading Lilly Pilly hedge

Family Chickens

Today we added 5 Hyline brown hens to our chicken coop. These girls will be ready to lay eggs in 3 weeks. Hunter was stoked to play with them as we set them up with scratch layer feed, veggie scraps, water and saw dust filled layer boxes. There’s nothing better than seeing your baby boy excited to be outdoors, hanging with the chooks and fearless. Most of our days are spent running around, playing outdoors, chasing the kelpie pups, patting the cat, watching the bird life, watering the veggie patch, gardening and enjoying the sunshine. Hunter likes to protest if … Continue reading Family Chickens

Slugs and moths

We’ve had our first few challenges with our petite green house. We purchased a greenhouse from Kogan 6x3m and loosened the soil with a plough. We planted broccoli, cauliflower, carrots, tomatoes, capsicum, onions, shallots and some lettuce and spinach to start. It flourished and grew well but the moths started water everything green. I was trying to capture them by hand but I couldn’t keep up. I read somewhere about mint keeping them away, so I planted some in there and it seemed to work. Now I have a slug issue eating the cauliflower and destroying them and making them … Continue reading Slugs and moths
