Spring is upon us. It’s been a slow start with some small frost remaining some mornings, but these next couple of days will be warm enough to sow and finalising the preparation of our raised garden beds and rows of soil for sowing seeds.
Ben and I purchased a bundle of seeds to sow vegetables, fruits, herbs and native edible bushes on our acreage.
It’s all a bit of trial and error with being new to the growing seen, but we will do our best and learn as we go.
I’ve already learnt a few lessons in the sowing of winter vegetables. I planted some cauliflower and broccoli, as well as carrots in the winter. I didn’t plant them earlier enough in the winter and I planted them in a greenhouse. What I didn’t realise is that when the soil is too warm, the broccoli and cauliflower won’t grow large heads, they will only grow small ones. It’s also important to thin out your seeds or plant a few seeds in each hole, as most of them will take and you will have huge bunches of sprouts.
Carrots also need some spacing between seeds otherwise they won’t thrive and grow to a full length carrot.
Lots to learn and I will log and take photos as we go.
So far since coming into spring I’ve planted celery, chamomile, garlic and we still have our cherry tree and fig tree going strong.
This weekend we will finish off prepping the other garden beds and sow a bunch more seeds.
Fingers crossed we can get an abundance of produce.
